Alexandria sits on the edge of a fire place in the lobby of a hotel. She picks up a quarter that sits next to her. She flips the quarter ten feet into a fountain to her right. She is wearing a floor length gown that sparkles under one of the only two lights in the room. The other is on the main desk of the hotel.
A tall man in a hotel uniform walks out from behind the main desk. Alexandria stands and twiddles her thumbs nervously, then switches to fiddling with her ring. The man approaches her with a grim look on his face. He gestures for her to sit down but she shakes her head “no.” She stops fiddling with the ring on her left ring finger and her hands begin to tremble violently. She claps her hands hard, once to get them to stop. She folds her arms angrily, upset with herself.
The man begins to tear up at her reaction to his presence. He sits down by the fire place. He stands up. He walks back behind the desk and begins to file papers and take notes.
Alexandria goes knock-kneed and she begins to ball. She collapses down back onto the side of the fireplace. She hides her face in her hands, her elbows resting on her knees.
A man in an admiral’s suit walks in through the front door. He does a left face towards Alexandria. She remains in her position, taking no notice of the admiral.
The admiral sits down next to her. He wraps his arm around her. She looks up, unpleased. She stands up and walks to the main counter. The hotel worker leaves and goes into the “Employees Only” room. Alexandria bawls.
The admiral stands. With apologetic eyes, he walks over to Alexandria and puts his hand on the small of her back. She doesn’t move. The admiral looks at a note on the employee’s side of the desk. It reads “For Alexandria Monta: Your husband was shot and killed. He served well.”
